Long before a light fixture comes to market, it takes shape in the mind of its designer. Meet one such product designer whose seed of an idea turned into the Embers Wall Sconce from AFX Inc.

About Grant Chapelle

As Product Design and Creative Manager, Grant Chapelle develops new product designs, oversees design collaborations, and is responsible for marketing and branding creative direction.

Education, Early Career, Key Projects

Grant studied Fine Art, Automotive, Product, and Interior Design. He is an Alumnus of the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His professional design career began at a well-known Chicago based lighting manufacturer New Metal Crafts Inc. While there, he developed a broad understanding of luminaire design and manufacturing. He worked alongside world-renowned architects and designers in the creation and restoration of decorative lighting fixtures, and collaborated on projects for companies including Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Disney, and Princess Cruise Lines.

Evolution as AFX Product Designer

Grant’s work at AFX Inc. began as a Product Engineer. In that position, he gained an understanding of fixture construction and product technology. He soon took on the role of Principal Designer. In that position, he was instrumental in the early development of decorative fluorescent and LED lighting fixtures. During his career at AFX, he has developed products for many high-profile projects including most recently Ayesha Curry’s, International Smoke restaurants in Miami, FL and San Diego, CA, The Houstonian, Houston, TX, and Great Wolf Lodge Resorts.

Awards and Recognition

Grant has been recognized by the American Lighting Association as a leader in design and has been the recipient of numerous design awards including several Lighting for Tomorrow product design competition awards. His extensive knowledge and appreciation of art and design are often reflected in his visual aesthetic and approach to fixture design. He continues to explore the limits of artistic expression and technology.

This wall sconce will be on display at the AFX booth at LightFair 2021, New York. We asked Grant about the inspiration for the design.

Design Notes

Inspiration: fire, embers, flame
Vision: Wanted fixture to appear burned from the bottom edge
Finish choice: Outside finish is matte black to be reminiscent of burnt wood; inside is bright polished copper to be reminiscent of flames
Visual effect: Decorative light pattern projected on the wall
