The LIA Fräbel puts you in famous company
When you win a LightFair Innovations Award, everybody knows you earn the highest recognition for your product and the lighting industry’s most coveted honor. But bragging rights and prestige aside, did you know you will also be in the company of celebrities and world leaders who are proud owners of a Fräbel Glass sculpture? These artistic glass sculptures can be found in prominent art collections around the world including The Corning Museum of Glass, The Smithsonian Institute, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and also in the private collection of six presidents, Pope John Paul II, countless movie stars, celebrities and world leaders including Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Elton John, Nelson Mandela and others.
A cherished legacy
The beautifully sculpted Fräbel sculptures are a nod to the 2000-year-old tradition of glassblowing.
Hans Godo Fräbel, one of the founding fathers of contemporary flame glass art and a world-renowned scientific glassblower from Germany was recognized for his extraordinary technique and artistry with flame and glass at an early age. After moving to the United States to pursue his education, he started blowing scientific glass for Georgia Tech in 1965. Fräbel established the Fräbel Glass Art Studio and Gallery in Atlanta, GA in 1968. His persistent endeavors and successful experimentation elevated flame or torch glass as a serious medium for fine art.
In this technique, glass artists sculpt borosilicate glass using propane and oxygen torches at a temperature of over 3000 degrees Fahrenheit. The highly durable, heat-resistant glass melts and takes on the stunning contours of the LightFair Innovations Award as if to symbolize the enduring talent and perseverance of the innovator who will be its worthy owner.
